Desilt Ganga To Prevent Floods: CPI-M

The CPI-M on Friday urged the central government to desilt the Ganga river which it said was causing floods every year.

In the case of the Bihar foods, the damage could have been controlled had the release of water from the Bansagar dam been managed better, the Communist Party of India-Marxist said.

The CPI-M expressed concern at the flood devastation in Bihar, where it said 135 people had been killed and 35 lakh affected in 12 districts.

Urging the Bihar government to provide immediate relief and adequate compensation for those who have lost almost everything, it said there were widespread complaints about the woefully inadequate relief works.

India, UK announce deals worth 9 Billion Pounds

LONDON:  India and the UK have declared  deals worth 9-billion pounds as they signed a civil nuclear pact, decided to collaborate in the field of defence as well as cyber security. Both the countries also decided to  launch  a railway rupee bond.

British Prime Minister David Cameron termed the relations between the two sides as a “new dynamic modern partnership” and asserted his country’s support for India’s permanent membership of the UN Security Council.

“During this visit British and Indian companies are announcing new collaborations together worth 9 billion pounds,” he said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“We want to become the number one partners to finance the immense economic vision Prime Minister Modi and make London the centre for off-shore rupee trading with the launch of 1-billion worth of bonds including the first government- backed rupee denominated bond,” Mr Cameron added.

Prime Minister Modi put forward his plans for India to use London as a financial base for fundraising.

“We are going to use the London market for fundraising even more and I am happy to announced that we are set to launch a railway rupee bond in London. It is appropriate as the journey of Indian Railways started in the UK,” Prime Minister Modi said.

Prime Minister Modi was given a guard of honour by the 48-member F Company Scots guard accompanied by the regimental band of Irish guards.

Mr Cameron  received Prime Minister Modi. The  two leaders went  to the world’s most famous political office for a nearly 90-minute dialogue.

The UK is currently  ranked at 18th position in the list of India’s top 25 trading partners.  The two-way trade in 2014-15 stood at $14.34 billion. With a total equity investment of $22.26 billion between 2000-2015, the UK is the third largest inward investor in India, after Mauritius and Singapore.

“The conclusion of the civil nuclear agreement is a symbol of our mutual trust and our resolve to combat climate change. The agreement for cooperation in India’s Global Centre for Clean Energy Partnerships will strengthen safety and security in the global nuclear industry,” Prime Minister Modi said.

The Prime Minister stressed that India attaches great value to defence and security cooperation with UK.

“This cooperation will grow. I am also pleased that UK will participate in the International Fleet Review in India in February 2016. UK will also be a strong partner in India’s defence modernization plans, including our Make in India mission in defence sector,” Prime Minister Modi added.

Modi also announced to launch a new fast track mechanism for UK investments in India.
“We will also increasingly raise funds in London’s financial market. I am pleased, but also believe it is natural, that we will issue a Railways Rupee Bond in London.

This is where the journey of Indian Railways began,” he said.

He thanked Prime Minister Cameron for the strong British support for India’s permanent membership of the reformed UN Security Council as well as membership in the international export control regimes.

“Our partnership will not only create opportunities and increase the prosperity for our people, but also strengthen our two nations’ capabilities to advance our many shared interests and address our challenges. These include peace and stability in Asia, especially in South Asia and West Asia; maritime security; cyber security; and, of course, terrorism and extremism,” the Prime Minister said.

The UK is ranked first among the G20.  India undertook 122 FDI projects in the UK in 2014-15.  Indian businesses in the UK employ around 110,000 people, 65,000 of whom work for the Tata Group.

JK Tyre To Set Up World Class R&D Centre In Mysuru

Top News

Unveiling its 10 millionth radial truck tyre here using a robot, JK Tyre and Industries has said it will combine its several R&D centres under one roof to set up a world-class research centre here.

JK Tyres has been using robotics technology since 2003, and we are using 14 such robots nicknamed ‘Adams’ in our Mysuru plant,” Chairman Raghupati Singhania told IANS in an interview, pointing to the robot which brought on stage the company’s ten millionth radial at an event here on Monday.

“Technology is back. Our R&D centres currently spread over different locations are now going to be brought under one roof in a world-class research centre here with an investment of Rs 100 crore ($15 million)

“It will house the most modern and advanced equipment manned by highly experienced engineers and scientists with deep insight into material resource, designs, aesthetics and structures, ” he said, adding that the centre will start with 200 scientists, whose number will double during the next one year,” Singhania said.

Noting that JK Tyres pioneered radial technology in India, being the first to produce such tyres for trucks and buses in 1999, he said it is R&D which helps the company remain ahead as tyre technology is “ever evolving and developing rapidly”.

“JK Tyre is going greener, not only in manufacturing processes and plants, but also in products,” he said.

“The green tyres that we produce have low rolling resistance, which helps in saving fuel. Besides, we are constantly reducing our carbon footprint by reducing energy and water consumption — two critical resources in tyre manufacturing,” the chairman said.

“Ours is the first Indian company to have completed the ‘Carbon Footprint Verification Process’ as set down by the British Standards Institute. This year, we achieved total energy benchmark levels of 10.9 giga per tonne, which makes JK among the top five worldwide in the sector,” he added.

Singhania also revealed that all JK Tyres plants have “zero water discharge” and that they have grown over 5 lakh trees around their various plant locations.

In this connecttion, Karnataka government representatives at Monday’s event were so enthusiastic about the progress of the tyre plant here that PWD Minister H.C. Mahadevappa said he wants the JK Group as a whole along with its other verticals in cement, paper, sugar and agri-products to become the largest employer in the state.

Sensitive Data on India’s Scorpene Submarines Leaked

New Delhi: Sensitive data related to India’s Scorpene submarines has been leaked, with French shipbuilder DCNS which designed the submarine facing a leak of documents spreading over 22,000 pages, a report in Australian media revealed on Tuesday.

Top news
According to a report in The Australian, DCNS, which recently won a contract to design 12 submarines for Australia, includes details of submarine’s underwater sensors, above-water sensors, combat management system, torpedo launch system and specifications, communications system and navigation systems.

Variants of Scorpene submarines are also used by Malaysia and Chile with Brazil to join the club soon.

First of the Scorpene class submarines being built in India Kalvari went for sea trials in May, 2016 and is expected to be inducted in the Indian Navy soon.

Indian Navy officials have said the six submarines, once inducted, would form the core of the Navy’s submarine arm for the next two decades.

According to the report, DCNS has said that such a leak of technical data could not happen with its proposed submarine for Australia.

The DCNS also implied that the leak might have occurred at India’s end, rather than from France.

“Uncontrolled technical data is not possible in the Australian Aarrangements,” the company said as per the report in The Australian.

“Multiple and independent controls exist within DCNS to prevent unauthorised access to data and all data movements are encrypted and recorded. In the case of India, where a DCNS design is built by a local company, DCNS is the provider and not the controller of technical data,” it said.

My Writing will Never be the Same, Says Author Perumal Murugan

Top News

New Delhi: “My writings will be never the same. A censor is seated inside me and he is testing every word that is born within me. His constant caution that a word may be misunderstood and I’m unable to shake him off,” said acclaimed Tamil author Perumal Murugan here on Monday.

This was Murugan’s first public speech after announcing his “death” over social media after a controversy broke out in 2015 over his book “Madhorubagan” (One part woman). The book earned the wrath of some Hindu groups and castes and copies of his books were burned at the town of Tiruchengode, where the novel is set.

However, in July 2016, the Madras High Court quashed all criminal cases filed against the author.

In a moving statement read out after the release of his news book, a collection of 200 poems titled “Kozhayin Paadalkal” (Songs of a Coward), at the Nehru Memorial Museum And Library, Murugan said that it was the court verdict that propelled him to resume writing.

Top News“The question of whether a word or a sentence in a judicial verdict should determine if I write or not remains in my mind. If a faceless force can put a full stop to writing, can’t a line in a judicial verdict bolster writing? Moreover, the imperative ‘write’ suits my present state of mind and is a cause for happiness,” he said, adding that thus he resolved to resume writing and start publishing.

“The publication of this book marks this beginning,” he said.

Talking about the self-imposed exile, the author said that it was poetry that saved him from despair.

“Between December 2014 and June 2016 I couldn’t so much as scratch a line in the first three months. As though the fingers of my heart had become numb. I couldn’t read a thing. Even when I turned the newspaper my eyes would scan the print but my mind would not absorb a word,” he reminisced.

“I wallowed in a dark hole without the urge to see or talk to anybody. But as I ruminated over my existence, there came a certain instant when the sluice gates were breached. I began to write. I chronicled the moment when I felt like a rat, dazzled by the light, burrowing itself into its hole,” he added.

Invoking Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar, Murugan said that though the court asked him not to live in fear, he finds it tough. “The learned judges have said that ‘I should not live under fear’. But my old teacher, the great Thiruvalluvar has said, ‘Folly meets fearful ills with fearless heart; To fear where cause of fear exists is wisdom’s part’,”

Murugan, who prefers to stay away from sensationalism also said that he accepted the invitation of the publishers to express his gratitude to those who lent support to him.
“During the nightmarish time…writers from Tamilnadu, from other parts of India and from across the world — stood by me, extending their support in various ways. Across the country voices were raised in support of freedom of expression and against intolerance…I accepted this invitation to speak here only to express my gratitude to those voices,” he said.

Stressing that his written words will speak more now, Murugan also requested the media to allow him privacy.

“It is silence that gives me strength now. I’ll write to gain further strength. My request therefore to the media and organisers of lit fests is this: Please do not ask me to speak. Let me be quiet. And write. I shall speak to you through my written words,” he added..

Later, in a discussion with author Nilanjana Roy, Murugan noted that his writings have always dealt with the issue of castes. “In my writings, I have dealt with relationship between castes and conflicts between various castes. I believe no writer can write single word in defence of castes,” he said.

69,000 Indian Will Lose Jobs Because Of This Technology

Top News

Even as Indian IT firms corner a large chunk of the market that arises from services related to the internet-of-things, the country will lose about 69,000 jobs until 2021 due to the adoption of the technology, a report by consulting firm Zinnov said.

This number is over and above the hundreds of thousands of jobs that experts say will be lost due to automation in IT and will predominantly impact unskilled and blue-collar workers.

“Internet-of-things technology will impact 120,000 jobs in the country by 2021. 94,000 jobs will be eliminated, and 25,000 jobs will be created in the five-year period,” Hardik Tiwari, engagement lead at Zinnov, told ET.
Top News

Internet-of-things (IoT) is the term used to describe the addition of sensors and chips to machinery which allows them to the monitored and controlled over the internet.

People working in areas such as office administration, support staff and those in maintenance will see their roles being taken over by technology. The new jobs created will be IoT product managers, robot co-ordinators, industrial programmers and network engineers.

Newer technologies are expected to constrict job supply in some areas. In July, research firm HfS predicted that India’s IT services industry would lose 6.4 lakh”lowskilled” jobs to automation in the next five years.

The HfS report stated that though “low-skilled” jobs will fall by 30%, “mediumskilled” jobs will increase by 8% and high-skilled jobs will rise by 56%.

Indian firms currently have about 40% of the addressed IoT services market a share that is expected to rise to 44% by 2021, as they boost their capabilities through acquisitions.
But the addressed market of $2.8 billion, currently, is just a fraction of the overall IoT services market of $66 billion, as companies are not as yet outsourcing their spend. The addressed market is expected to reach $7.3 billion in 2021.

The Indian domestic market contributes $1.6 billion to the overall IoT market, the report said, and is expected to grow to $3.8 billion in the next five years. Indian corporates are leading the charge in spending on IoT, accounting for 80% of the spend.
The government contributes just 20% to the domestic IoT market.

Chetan Bhagat’s Latest Book Breaks Pre-Order Record

Breaking all records in Amazon’s pre-order history, bestselling author Chetan Bhagat’s latest fiction “One Indian Girl” is now the leading title on pre-orders, the site has ever witnessed. The banker-turned-writer who debut with his novel, ‘Five Point Someone’ took to Twitter to announced the title of the book.

“Launched under the exclusive online partnership between Amazon and Rupa Publishing, the pre-orders went live on Amazon at 2 PM yesterday and in just the first two hours, it has created history by becoming the leading title on pre-orders, the site has witnessed since its launch in 2013.

The online shopping site said in a statement, “‘One Indian Girl’ beat ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s’ Day 1 pre-order number within 30 minutes of going live on the platform.”
Today News
The book which comes after five fictions by the author revolves around an Indian girl who is intelligent and successful, because of which she finds it difficult to get love. “The book hopes to question society, which judges women achievers,” the 42-year-old author writes on his blog.

“It asks why, when it comes to love, being intelligent and too successful is almost a drawback for women,” he further wrote. Bhagat, who is believed to have pioneered the genre of ‘campus novels’ in the country wishes to question the discrimination meted out to women by the society.

In his female first person talk, he wrote in the teaser, “Hi, I’m Radhika Mehta and I’m getting married this week. I work in a top investment bank. Thank you for reading my crazy story. However, let me warn you. You may not like me too much.”

The teaser goes on. “You may not like me because, One, I make a lot of money. Two, I have an opinion on everything. Three, I have had sex before. Now, if I were a guy, you’d be cool with all this. Since I am a girl, these things don’t really make me too likeable, do they?” says the teaser.

According to Bhagat, he wrote from a feminist point of view because he wanted to get into a woman’s head and unravel the mystery as he, often found the women mysterious, particularly in the way they think.

The title, which is set to hit stands on October 1, also surpassed the biggest release of the year so far, ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ with selling 20 times the former on the first day of pre-order.

CAS Delays Decision on WADA Appeal Against Narsingh

Rio de Janeiro: Narsingh Yadav’s fate continues to hang in the balance with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) yet to announce its verdict on the appeal by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) against the clean chit to the star wrestler in a doping case.

“The meeting is now over. The decision has been kept pending and no time has been given by the CAS,” Indian Chef de Mission Rakesh Gupta told reporters after the CAS meeting here on Thursday.

Narsingh was cleared of doping charges by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) ahead of the Olympics. But the WADA decided to appeal to the CAS against the clean chit just two days before Narsingh was scheduled to compete at the Games.

With the CAS delaying its decision, Narsingh’s campaign at the ongoing Rio Olympics has now been thrown into uncertainty.

According to the official website of the Rio Games, the Mumbai grappler was scheduled to start his Olympic campaign against Zelimkhan Khadjiev of France in the qualification round of the men’s 74 kg Freestyle category on Friday.

The 26-year-old grappler also underwent his weigh-in on Thursday.

The ongoing CAS episode is a continuation of a long ordeal for Narsingh.

He was preferred over double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar to take part in the Olympics by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) that led to a major legal battle between the two wrestlers.

Narsingh, who bagged the quota with a bronze medal finish in last year’s World Championships then ran into trouble over alleged doping offences.

He first returned positive for a banned steroid following a dope test on June 25 by NADA, before being cleared on August 1.

The WFI also communicated to the world’s apex wrestling body, the United World Wrestling (UWW) that NADA has cleared Narsingh of all the doping-related charges and the 26-year-old would be re-included in the team for the 74kg competition.

The UWW gave the green light to Narsingh for participation on August 3. However, Narsingh’s route had to clear the final WADA hurdle to compete, which reviewed the NADA panel verdict and challenged it at CAS for further deliberation.

Narsingh had claimed of a conspiracy to frame him and had filed a police report in this regard, although he refrained from naming anyone.

Shuttler Sindhu Storms Into Olympics Final; to Face Carolina

Rio de Janeiro: India’s P.V. Sindhu thumped Nozomi Okuhara of Japan to enter the final of the women’s singles event of badminton competitions, assuring the country at least a silver medal at the Olympic Games here on Thursday.

World No.10 Sindhu registered a 21-19, 21-10 triumph in the semi-finals over world No.6 Okuhara to become the first Indian shuttler to enter the final of the Olympics.

With this win, double World Championship bronze medallist Sindhu improved her head-to-head record against reigning All England Open champion Okuhara to 2-3.

In the final, she will face two-time reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain, who beat defending champion Li Xuerui of China 21-14, 21-16.

Sindhu warned the top seed that her best is yet to come, playing a mental game before the final. “Of course, I am yet to give my best. That’s in the next game. I will definitely make the wish of our country people for gold come true. I will play my heart out,” Sindhu told reporters.

Irrespective of the colour of the medal in the final on Friday, it will be India’s second medal in the Rio Games after wrestler Sakshi Malik bagged a bronze medal in the women’s 58kg category.

“My target now of course is to win the gold. Definitely I hope I will give my best performance tomorrow (Friday) and for me to be here for the first time in Olympics and reach the final is a great feeling,” Sindhu said.

For Sindhu, who was on a giant-killing spree after dismissing two higher-ranked opponents — Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying and World No. 2 Wang Yihan of China in the pre-quarter-final and the quarter-final respectively — Thursday’s win was also an extension of her good form.

Sindhu’s height and long reach gave her a lot of advantage against the pint-sized Okuhara, who also had her right thigh strapped.

Especially, Sindhu’s sharp cross-court game and half smash helped her get off to a fine start.

In the first game between the two 21-year-olds, Sindhu started the match on a positive note, taking a 4-1 lead before the Japanese reduced it to 3-4. But Sindhu took two straight points to hold a 5-3 lead before Okuhara got a point to sit at 4-5. But Sindhu upped the ante and took a 8-4 lead before Okuhara bagged two points as Sindhu hit wide.
Sindhu reached the mid-game interval with a 11-6 lead and after a two-minute break, Okuhara’s delectable drop shots helped her bounce back. She was trailing 10-12 when Sindhu forced her to hit the net and take a 14-10 advantage.

Later, Sindhu took a 15-12 lead that became 17-14 but Okuhara’s net game helped her almost reduce the deficit. She kept coming back at Sindhu, forcing the Indian to make some unforced errors — hitting wide.

But Sindhu remained always in the lead, albeit a slender one-point advantage, before winning the game 21-19.

In the second game, Sindhu again began convincingly taking a 3-0 lead before Okuhara took five straight points to sit at a 5-3 lead.

Afterwards it was a neck-and-neck contest. Sindhu rattled Okuhara with two straight points as the Japanese hit wide and failed to return a fierce smash from the Indian.
Okuhara again held the lead at 7-5 and at the mid-game interval Sindhu led 11-10.
After the break, Sindhu turned more aggressive and played a fearless game to stun the Japanese who looked short of ideas.

Sindhu kept earning points, hitting one smash after another to enjoy a comfortable ride. As many as 10 points on the trot catapulted her to the final with a 21-10 win in the second game.

Afterwards, what followed was a screaming celebration from Sindhu and her camp.
“I gave my everything in today’s match, but my opponent was not easy. She came back after losing the first game to me and till ten points we were equal. It could have been anyone’s game,” Sindhu said.

“But I didn’t take it easy and kept on going. Every point for me was important the game had long rallies and some of my smashes were going to the net, but my coach told me to keep on going. I am very happy the way it went and it was a good day for me.”
